New Delhi: Coal gasification projects with a combined investment of approximately ₹65,000 crore are currently under execution across India, according to the Coal Secretary. The projects are expected to play a crucial role in promoting cleaner utilization of domestic coal resources and reducing the country’s dependence on imported fuels, fertilizers, and chemical feedstocks.
The government has been actively encouraging coal gasification as part of its strategy to diversify coal usage beyond conventional power generation. The technology converts coal into synthesis gas (syngas), which can be used to produce fertilizers, methanol, synthetic natural gas, ammonium nitrate, and a range of industrial chemicals.
Officials stated that the ongoing projects are expected to strengthen India’s energy security, support industrial growth, and contribute to the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat. Several public and private sector companies are investing in large-scale coal gasification facilities across different states, creating new opportunities for downstream industries.
Industry experts believe the projects will generate significant employment, attract fresh investments, and boost economic activity in coal-bearing regions. The initiative is also expected to support the development of a robust domestic chemicals and manufacturing ecosystem while enhancing value addition from India’s vast coal reserves.
As India seeks to balance economic growth with sustainable resource utilization, coal gasification is emerging as a key pillar of the country’s long-term industrial and energy strategy.
