Indian Recyclers Urge Govt to Remove Import Tax on Aluminium Scrap

New Delhi: Indian metal recyclers have sought the removal of import tax on aluminium scrap, highlighting concerns over rising input costs and supply constraints, according to a recent industry communication.

In a letter addressed to the government, recyclers emphasized that the existing import duty is impacting the availability of raw materials and increasing production costs for the domestic recycling sector. They argued that easing import restrictions would help ensure a steady supply of aluminium scrap, which is critical for secondary aluminium production.

The industry noted that recycled aluminium plays a key role in reducing energy consumption and supporting sustainability goals. Lowering import taxes, they said, would not only benefit manufacturers but also promote environmentally friendly practices by encouraging recycling.

Recyclers further pointed out that global competition has intensified, and higher costs could affect the competitiveness of Indian firms in both domestic and export markets. They urged policymakers to consider policy adjustments to support the growth of the recycling ecosystem.

The government is expected to review the request as part of broader efforts to strengthen the metals sector while balancing domestic industry interests and environmental priorities.
