BHP Eyes Nearly 2 Million Tonnes Copper Output After Record Escondida Performance

Global mining giant BHP has raised expectations for its copper production, now forecasting output to reach close to 2 million tonnes, driven by record throughput at its flagship Escondida mine in Chile.

The improved outlook comes after strong operational performance at Escondida, the world’s largest copper mine, where record concentrator throughput and enhanced recovery rates helped offset challenges such as declining ore grades.

BHP indicated that its full-year copper production is likely to be in the upper half of its guidance range of 1.9 million to 2.0 million tonnes, signaling resilience in its core commodities business despite mixed performance across some assets.

In addition to Escondida, the company benefited from better-than-expected output at the Antamina mine in Peru, where improved ore grades and operational efficiencies supported higher production guidance. However, this was partially offset by weaker performance at the Spence (Pampa Norte) operations in Chile, where ore complexity continues to impact output levels.

BHP also highlighted progress in its long-term copper growth pipeline, including plans for a new concentrator at Escondida and ongoing development at the Resolution copper project in the United States. These initiatives align with the company’s strategy to expand its exposure to copper, a metal increasingly critical for electrification, renewable energy, and digital infrastructure.

The latest production outlook reinforces copper’s growing importance within BHP’s portfolio, as global demand continues to rise amid the energy transition and technological advancements. The company’s strong performance at key assets positions it to capitalize on tightening supply conditions and sustained demand in the global copper market.
