US Has Only Two Months of Rare Earth Supplies Left, Report Warns

The United States reportedly has only about two months’ worth of rare earth supplies available for military use, raising concerns over supply chain vulnerability and strategic dependence on foreign sources. The warning was highlighted in a report by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), citing sources familiar with the matter.

Rare earth elements are critical materials used in a wide range of advanced technologies, including missile guidance systems, fighter jets, radars, electric vehicles and renewable energy equipment. According to the report, the limited stockpile could affect the ability of the United States to sustain extended military operations if supply disruptions persist.

The situation also underscores the heavy dependence of the United States on foreign rare earth supplies, particularly from China. Data cited in the report indicates that China accounted for about 71 percent of US rare earth imports between 2021 and 2024, highlighting the strategic importance of the mineral supply chain.

Experts say rare earth elements are essential for both defense and high-tech manufacturing, making secure access to these resources a national security priority. Growing geopolitical tensions and supply restrictions have further intensified concerns about long-term availability of these critical minerals.

In response to these challenges, the United States has been exploring efforts to expand domestic mining and processing capacity, strengthen partnerships with allied countries and build strategic stockpiles of critical minerals to reduce reliance on external suppliers.
