New Delhi, September 21, 2026: Coal India Limited (CIL) is broadening its business portfolio beyond conventional coal mining, with investments and projects spanning renewable energy, coal gasification, power generation, critical minerals and advanced materials.
The diversification strategy is aimed at strengthening the company’s role across India’s wider energy and mineral ecosystem while developing new business opportunities alongside its core coal operations.
Push Into Renewable Energy
Coal India has been expanding its renewable-energy portfolio through solar power projects, including ground-mounted, rooftop, captive and utility-scale installations. The company has already commissioned around 550 MW of solar capacity, while additional projects are under development.
CIL is also exploring energy-storage solutions, including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), to complement renewable generation and improve grid flexibility.
Coal Gasification and Coal-to-Chemicals
Another major pillar of the diversification programme is coal gasification. CIL is pursuing projects that can convert coal into higher-value products such as synthetic natural gas, urea, ammonium nitrate and other chemicals.
Its coal-to-chemicals portfolio includes major projects such as Talcher Fertilizers, Bharat Coal Gasification & Chemicals and Coal Gas India. The company is also pursuing an underground coal-gasification pilot project.
These initiatives are intended to promote greater domestic production of chemicals and other products that India currently imports.
Focus on Critical Minerals
CIL is also entering the critical minerals and advanced materials space. The company is exploring opportunities across minerals considered important for sectors such as clean energy, electronics, batteries and advanced manufacturing.
An integrated graphite value chain is among the initiatives being pursued, covering activities from mining and beneficiation to purification, spheronisation, coating and production of anode materials.
The company is additionally examining opportunities in iron ore and other diversified minerals.
Building a Diversified Energy Business
The broader strategy represents a shift in CIL’s business-development approach, combining its existing strengths in mining and energy with new areas of growth.
CIL’s portfolio now covers coal mining, thermal power, renewable energy, energy storage, coal gasification, chemicals, critical minerals and advanced materials.
The company has said that technology validation, commercial viability, partnerships and structured risk assessment will be important considerations as these projects progress.
The diversification comes as India’s energy sector evolves, with growing attention on energy security, domestic manufacturing, critical-mineral supply chains and lower-carbon technologies.
