More Than 56% of California Electricity Demand Supplied by Wind, Water, & Solar in 2026

California keeps installing more and more renewable energy power plants and rooftop solar systems. Therefore, it keeps using more and more renewable energy. Stanford professor Mark Z. Jacobson, Director of the Atmosphere/Energy Program in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has long gone with the “WWS” (Wind, Water, Solar) categorization for renewables. He also tracks progress in his home state of California in terms of WWS installations and usage.

Yesterday, Jacobson highlighted a few milestones in the industry:

  1. WWS has met 56.2% of all electricity demand on the CAISO grid so far in 2026.
  2. WWS has exceeded 100% of electricity demand on the CAISO grid for 18.5% of all hours in 2026 so far.
  3. Saturday, September 13, was the 187th day of this year in which WWS reached 100% of all power demand at some point.

Overall, these are amazing achievements, especially for such a large state. The good news is it will be old news tomorrow, and the industry keeps marching forward.
