India Has Adequate Coal Stock for 90 Days, Says Union Minister Kishan Reddy

Union Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy has assured that India currently maintains sufficient coal reserves to meet demand for the next 90 days, providing a strong cushion for the country’s power and industrial sectors.

The minister stated that coal stocks at thermal power plants and mines remain at comfortable levels, ensuring uninterrupted electricity generation even during peak demand periods. This announcement comes amid rising electricity consumption driven by economic activity and seasonal factors such as increased summer demand.

According to official data, proactive measures taken by the government—including enhanced coal production, improved logistics, and better coordination between coal companies and power utilities—have contributed to the steady buildup of reserves. Domestic coal output has seen consistent growth, reducing dependence on imports and strengthening energy security.

The government has also focused on streamlining coal transportation through rail and road networks, addressing past bottlenecks that had led to supply concerns. Increased dispatch efficiency has ensured timely delivery of coal to power plants across the country.

Industry experts believe that maintaining a 90-day stock level is a significant achievement, as it helps stabilize the power sector and minimizes the risk of outages. It also provides confidence to industries reliant on consistent electricity supply, including manufacturing and infrastructure.

The minister emphasized that the government remains committed to further boosting domestic coal production while also exploring cleaner energy alternatives as part of India’s long-term sustainability goals. Efforts are ongoing to modernize mining operations and improve environmental compliance in the sector.

With demand for power expected to grow steadily, the assurance of adequate coal reserves highlights the government’s focus on ensuring reliable and resilient energy supply for the nation.
