Copper Prices Climb as AI Stocks Rebound and Strong Chinese Demand Tightens Supply

London, October 28, 2026: Global copper prices advanced as improving sentiment around artificial intelligence (AI) stocks and stronger demand from China, the world’s largest copper consumer, supported the industrial metal. However, a stronger US dollar and concerns about elevated prices limited further gains.

According to Reuters, benchmark three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange (LME) rose during Tuesday’s trading session, reaching around $14,487.50 per metric tonne at one point, its highest level since October 16. The rally reflected renewed investor confidence in AI-related growth and concerns about the availability of copper outside the United States.

AI Infrastructure Boosts Copper Demand Outlook

The recovery in AI-related stocks has renewed expectations of stronger copper consumption as technology companies expand their investments in data centres and digital infrastructure.

Copper is a critical material for electrical wiring, power distribution systems, cooling infrastructure and other equipment required to operate data centres. The rapid development of AI computing facilities is expected to increase demand for electricity networks and related infrastructure, supporting the long-term outlook for copper consumption.

Market sentiment also improved following developments surrounding AI company Anthropic, which helped lift technology stocks and improve appetite for industrial commodities.

Analysts believe that continued investment in AI infrastructure could provide additional support to copper prices, although short-term movements will remain sensitive to financial market sentiment and global economic conditions.

China Demand Strengthens as Import Premiums Surge

China’s copper market has emerged as another major source of support for prices. The Yangshan copper premium, a closely watched indicator of Chinese demand for imported copper, climbed to approximately $188 per tonne on October 27, reaching its highest level in nearly 13 years.

The increase indicates strong competition among buyers for imported copper amid tighter domestic availability.

Copper inventories on the Shanghai Futures Exchange also declined by more than 25% in the previous week to 54,356 tonnes, according to market data cited by Reuters. Maintenance at Chinese smelters has contributed to the reduction in available stocks.

These developments suggest that buyers in China are facing tighter supplies, helping underpin international copper prices despite concerns about the impact of elevated costs on price-sensitive consumers.

Supply Constraints Support Market Sentiment

Supply-side concerns are providing further support to the copper market. Although inventories in London Metal Exchange warehouses increased recently, a substantial portion of the stocks is concentrated in North America.

The geographical concentration of inventories has raised concerns about supply bottlenecks in other regions, where consumers may face tighter availability.

Meanwhile, constrained copper concentrate supplies are adding pressure to the global supply chain. The combination of limited availability outside the United States and strong demand from China has helped sustain near-term prices.

However, analysts caution that rising inventories and the possibility of weaker consumption at elevated price levels could limit the market’s upside.

Stronger US Dollar Limits Further Gains

Despite the positive momentum, the copper market continues to face macroeconomic headwinds. A stronger US dollar makes dollar-denominated commodities more expensive for buyers using other currencies, potentially weighing on demand.

Higher energy prices and uncertainty surrounding global economic growth could also influence industrial metal consumption.

Investors are monitoring central bank decisions and broader financial market developments for indications of the direction of interest rates, economic activity and commodity demand.

These factors are likely to contribute to volatility in copper prices in the coming sessions.

Outlook: Copper Market Remains Firm Amid Demand and Supply Risks

Copper’s latest advance highlights the growing influence of AI infrastructure investment on industrial commodity markets, alongside traditional demand drivers such as Chinese manufacturing and construction.

In the near term, prices are likely to remain sensitive to China’s import demand, global inventory movements, the US dollar and developments in AI-related equities.

While strong demand indicators and supply constraints are providing support, sustained price gains will depend on whether consumption remains robust enough to absorb available supplies.
