Copper Prices Near Record High as Grasberg Smelter Halt Tightens Supply, Aluminum Surges
Copper prices moved back toward record levels as a halt at the smelter processing ore from Indonesia’s giant Grasberg mine intensified concerns over already-tight global supplies. The latest disruption has added fresh momentum to a copper rally that has kept benchmark prices elevated for an extended period.
The disruption at Indonesia’s Gresik smelter is delaying copper shipments and raising concerns about the availability of refined metal. Grasberg, one of the world’s largest copper-producing operations, has already faced significant production challenges, making the latest smelter outage particularly important for global markets.
Copper has remained close to its all-time peak after reaching a record intraday level of around $6.70 per pound on COMEX on August 6. The combination of mine disruptions, limited inventories and strong demand has reinforced expectations of continued tightness in the copper market.
Meanwhile, aluminum prices also surged, reaching their strongest level in several weeks. The aluminum market received support from supply concerns after a major alumina facility in Brazil reduced production, highlighting broader vulnerabilities across global base-metal supply chains.
The strength in copper and aluminum reflects growing concerns that supply may struggle to keep pace with demand from electrification, renewable energy, power infrastructure, manufacturing and data-center investment. Copper is particularly important for electricity networks and energy-transition technologies, making supply disruptions increasingly significant for industrial consumers.
Analysts expect copper prices to remain sensitive to developments at Grasberg and other major mines. A prolonged disruption could further tighten the market, while a faster recovery in Indonesian production could eventually ease some of the pressure.
For aluminum, the outlook will similarly depend on the availability of alumina, energy costs and disruptions at major production centers. The simultaneous strength of both metals underscores the increasingly fragile balance between global industrial demand and available supply.
