U.S. Department of Energy Shortlists Five States for Advanced Nuclear Power Sites

Washington, D.C.: The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has shortlisted five states as potential locations for the next generation of advanced nuclear energy projects, marking a significant step in the Biden administration’s strategy to expand clean, reliable, and carbon-free electricity generation while meeting rising power demand from artificial intelligence (AI), data centres, and advanced manufacturing.

The selected states—Idaho, Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Wyoming—have been identified based on factors such as existing nuclear infrastructure, skilled workforce availability, grid connectivity, regulatory readiness, and community support. The sites are expected to play a key role in demonstrating advanced reactor technologies, including small modular reactors (SMRs), which are viewed as a safer, more flexible, and cost-effective alternative to conventional nuclear power plants.

The initiative forms part of the DOE’s broader effort to strengthen U.S. energy security, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and ensure a stable electricity supply as demand accelerates. The rapid expansion of AI-powered data centres, electric vehicle manufacturing, and domestic semiconductor production has significantly increased the need for reliable baseload power, prompting renewed interest in nuclear energy.

DOE officials said the shortlisted locations will undergo detailed technical, environmental, and regulatory assessments before final project decisions are made. The department will work closely with state governments, utilities, industry partners, and local communities to evaluate site suitability and accelerate deployment timelines.

Industry experts believe advanced nuclear reactors could complement renewable energy sources by providing continuous, emissions-free electricity regardless of weather conditions. The technology is also expected to enhance grid resilience while supporting industrial decarbonization and hydrogen production.

The announcement comes as governments worldwide are increasingly turning to nuclear power to meet climate goals and improve energy security. The United States has recently expanded financial incentives and policy support for advanced reactor development through federal funding programs and public-private partnerships.

If approved, the new projects could create thousands of construction and engineering jobs, stimulate regional economic development, and strengthen the U.S. nuclear supply chain while reinforcing the country’s leadership in next-generation clean energy technologies.
