China Accelerates Efforts to Extract Strategic Minerals from Seawater

China is stepping up efforts to develop technologies capable of extracting strategic minerals from seawater, as the country seeks to strengthen resource security and reduce dependence on traditional mining sources for critical raw materials.

Researchers and industry groups are advancing projects focused on recovering valuable minerals such as lithium, magnesium, uranium, and other strategic elements found in seawater. The initiative is part of a broader national strategy aimed at securing supplies of materials essential for clean energy technologies, advanced manufacturing, defense applications, and high-tech industries.

Although seawater contains vast quantities of dissolved minerals, extracting them economically and efficiently remains a major technological challenge.
