UCIL Plans Uranium Mining Projects in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, Awaiting Key Clearances

India’s Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) is planning to set up new uranium mining and processing plants in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh as part of its strategy to boost domestic uranium production. The proposed projects, however, are currently awaiting multiple regulatory and environmental clearances before construction can begin.

According to officials, the expansion is aimed at strengthening India’s nuclear fuel supply chain and reducing dependence on uranium imports. The new facilities are expected to enhance the country’s capacity to support its growing nuclear power programme.

The projects involve exploration, mining, and processing of uranium deposits identified in both states. UCIL is working closely with central and state authorities to secure approvals related to environmental impact, land acquisition, and forest clearances.

Experts note that while the projects hold strategic importance for India’s energy security, they must also address environmental concerns and ensure compliance with safety and sustainability norms. Local community engagement and rehabilitation measures are also expected to play a crucial role in the approval process.

Once cleared, the projects could significantly contribute to India’s long-term clean energy goals by supporting the expansion of nuclear power generation.
