Toyota Tsusho Joins Hands with JOGMEC for Heavy Rare Earth Project in Namibia

Toyota Tsusho has partnered with Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation to develop a heavy rare earth project in Namibia, marking a strategic move to secure critical mineral supplies.

The collaboration aims to strengthen Japan’s access to heavy rare earth elements, which are essential for advanced technologies such as electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, and high-performance electronics. The project is expected to reduce dependence on limited global suppliers and diversify sourcing channels.

Namibia, known for its rich mineral reserves, is emerging as an important destination for rare earth exploration and development. The partnership will focus on exploration, extraction, and sustainable development of these resources, while adhering to environmental and regulatory standards.

Officials highlighted that the initiative aligns with Japan’s broader strategy to secure stable supply chains for critical minerals amid growing global demand and geopolitical uncertainties.

The project is anticipated to enhance cooperation between Japanese firms and African nations, while contributing to Namibia’s mining sector growth and economic development.
