High Torque With No Emissions

Designed to handle tough field conditions without carbon emissions or noisy combustion engines, the GoSun All Electric Tractor delivers whisper-quiet operation and immediate, low-end electric torque. With the optional high efficiency foldout solar panels, the tractor continuously captures energy from the sun while working in the field or parked outdoors, significantly extending run times and reducing reliance on grid charging, the company says. Input From A Farmer

When I got the press release from GoSun, I wanted to get some input from an actual farmer. It just so happens that regular reader Dan Allard is a farmer in New Hampshire, so I asked him what he thought about electric tractors in general and the Moonrider 27 in particular. He was skeptical that this tractor will have the run time needed to complete many of the farming chores he does on a regular basis.

I have no doubt that Dan is correct. For the heavy-duty tasks his assortment of tractors perform, the Moonrider is probably not the right tool for the job. But I suspect the answer is very much the same as it is for electric cars. If an EV will do what you need it to do, it is the smart choice because of its instant torque, quiet operation, lack of regular maintenance, and absence of harmful emissions. But if you are towing a small herd of cows up the Rocky Mountains, a turbo-diesel engine may be the better option.

There are several advantages to going electric on a farm, including not paying for diesel fuel at today’s astronomical prices. From the point of view of the farmer, not inhaling diesel exhaust fumes all day is another secondary but very important feature.

If an electric tractor like the Moonrider 27 fits your needs, it will save you money and allow you to go about your daily chores without polluting your lungs and the environment. Be sure to check for local incentives that may make an electric tractor more affordable. If it’s not for you, that’s fine. Not every machine can be all things to all people. It’s good to have choices.
