Glencore Stands Between Anglo American–Teck and a $1.4 Billion Copper Prize

Glencore Holds Key to Anglo-Teck’s $1.4 Billion Copper Opportunity

Anglo American and Teck Resources are moving toward the completion of their proposed $53 billion merger, which would create Anglo Teck, a major global critical-minerals company with a strong focus on copper. However, one of the biggest potential financial rewards from the deal could depend on reaching an agreement with Glencore.

At the centre of the negotiations are two neighbouring copper operations in Chile: Collahuasi and Quebrada Blanca. Anglo American and Glencore each hold a 44% stake in Collahuasi, while Teck operates the nearby Quebrada Blanca complex. The proposed integration of these assets could unlock substantial operational and financial benefits.

According to Anglo American and Teck, combining and optimising the adjacent operations could generate an average $1.4 billion in annual underlying EBITDA uplift between 2030 and 2049, while potentially adding around 175,000 tonnes of copper production per year. The companies have identified the project as a major source of long-term value from the merger.

However, Glencore’s position in Collahuasi gives it considerable influence over the proposed integration. The companies will need to agree on asset valuations, the structure and management of an integrated operation, and how the economic benefits will be divided. Reports indicate that these negotiations could prove challenging, with Glencore in a strong bargaining position.

The discussions come as major mining companies intensify their race to secure high-quality copper assets. Copper is increasingly important for electricity networks, renewable energy, electric vehicles, data centres and other infrastructure, while concerns about future supply constraints continue to support strategic investment in the metal. Copper prices have also recently approached record levels amid supply disruptions and shifting global trade flows.

For Anglo American and Teck, successfully combining Quebrada Blanca and Collahuasi could transform the merged company’s copper portfolio and create one of the world’s most significant copper mining complexes. But until an agreement is reached with Glencore, a substantial portion of the deal’s potential value remains uncertain.

As the Anglo-Teck merger moves toward its expected completion window, investors will be watching closely to see whether the three mining giants can strike a deal that unlocks the $1.4 billion copper prize.
