New Delhi: As India intensifies efforts to secure a stable supply of critical minerals, urban mining is emerging as a promising strategy to reduce dependence on imports and strengthen the country’s resource security. By recovering valuable metals from discarded electronic devices, used batteries, industrial waste, and end-of-life equipment, urban mining offers a sustainable alternative to conventional mining.
Critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, copper, rare earth elements, and graphite are essential for manufacturing electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, semiconductors, consumer electronics, and advanced defence technologies. With global competition for these resources increasing, India is exploring ways to develop domestic sources beyond traditional mining.
Urban mining involves extracting reusable metals and minerals from electronic waste (e-waste), battery waste, and other recyclable materials using advanced recovery and recycling technologies. Experts believe that India’s rapidly growing volume of electronic waste presents a significant opportunity to build a circular economy while reducing environmental impact.
The government has introduced policies to improve e-waste management, promote battery recycling, and encourage investments in critical mineral recovery. Industry stakeholders are also calling for greater investment in recycling infrastructure, research and development, and incentives to make urban mining commercially viable.
Analysts say that while urban mining alone cannot fully meet India’s future demand for critical minerals, it can play a crucial role in supplementing domestic supply, reducing import dependence, lowering carbon emissions, and conserving natural resources. Combined with new mineral exploration and international partnerships, urban mining could become a key pillar of India’s long-term critical mineral strategy.
As the clean energy transition accelerates, urban mining is expected to become increasingly important in ensuring a secure, sustainable, and resilient supply chain for the minerals that power the technologies of the future.
