Trade, Defence and Critical Minerals Take Centre Stage in PM Modi’s Australia Visit

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Australia, with trade, defence cooperation, and critical minerals expected to dominate the agenda as the two countries seek to deepen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The visit comes at a time when India and Australia are expanding collaboration across key sectors, including economic cooperation, supply chain resilience, maritime security, clean energy, and emerging technologies. High-level discussions are expected to focus on strengthening bilateral trade under the existing economic cooperation framework and exploring new investment opportunities.

A major priority will be cooperation in critical minerals, with Australia possessing some of the world’s largest reserves of lithium, cobalt, nickel, and rare earth elements. These minerals are vital for manufacturing electric vehicles, batteries, renewable energy systems, semiconductors, and advanced defence technologies. India is looking to secure long-term supplies to support its clean energy transition and reduce dependence on imports.

Defence ties are also expected to feature prominently during the visit. The two countries are likely to review ongoing maritime cooperation, joint military exercises, defence technology partnerships, and regional security initiatives in the Indo-Pacific. Both nations have increasingly worked together to promote a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.

The leaders are also expected to discuss cooperation in renewable energy, education, digital technology, agriculture, and people-to-people exchanges. Enhanced collaboration in these areas is expected to boost economic growth while reinforcing the strategic partnership between the two democracies.

Analysts believe the visit will further strengthen India-Australia relations by advancing cooperation in critical supply chains, regional security, and sustainable economic development, while creating new opportunities for investment and technological collaboration.
