Government Extends Deadline for Rare Earth Magnet Manufacturing Tender to Boost Industry Participation

The Government of India has extended the submission deadline for its rare earth magnet manufacturing tender, giving prospective bidders additional time to prepare proposals for one of the country’s most significant initiatives to strengthen domestic production of critical materials.

The extension is intended to encourage greater participation from industry stakeholders and attract high-quality investment proposals for establishing rare earth permanent magnet manufacturing facilities in India. These magnets are essential components in electric vehicles (EVs), wind turbines, consumer electronics, industrial motors, and defence equipment.

The tender is part of the government’s broader strategy to build a self-reliant critical minerals ecosystem and reduce dependence on imports of rare earth magnets. By promoting domestic manufacturing, the initiative aims to enhance supply chain resilience, support the clean energy transition, and strengthen India’s position in the global advanced manufacturing sector.

Industry experts believe the extended deadline will allow companies more time to finalize technical and financial plans, form strategic partnerships, and evaluate project viability. The move is expected to improve competition and ensure stronger participation in the tender process.

The rare earth magnet manufacturing programme is a key component of India’s efforts to develop a robust value chain for critical minerals, create high-skilled employment, encourage technology transfer, and support the long-term growth of the electric mobility, renewable energy, and electronics industries.
