Coal India and UPRVUNL Sign Joint Venture to Develop Solar, Wind and Pumped Storage Projects in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow: Coal India Limited (CIL) and the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL) have entered into a joint venture (JV) to develop a range of renewable energy projects across Uttar Pradesh, including solar power, wind energy, pumped storage, and other clean energy initiatives.

The partnership aims to accelerate the state’s transition towards sustainable energy while strengthening its renewable power generation capacity. Under the agreement, the two entities will jointly identify, develop, finance, construct, and operate renewable energy projects to meet the growing electricity demand in Uttar Pradesh.

The proposed projects will include utility-scale solar parks, wind energy installations, hybrid renewable energy systems, and pumped storage projects that will help balance grid demand and improve energy reliability. Pumped storage facilities are expected to play a crucial role in storing excess renewable energy and supplying electricity during peak demand periods.

Coal India said the joint venture aligns with its long-term diversification strategy as it expands beyond coal mining into renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure. The company has been increasing investments in clean energy projects as part of its commitment to support India’s energy transition and achieve national climate goals.

The collaboration is expected to enhance Uttar Pradesh’s renewable energy portfolio, create employment opportunities, attract investments, and contribute to the state’s efforts to ensure reliable and affordable electricity while reducing carbon emissions.

Industry experts believe the partnership marks another significant step in India’s push to diversify its energy mix, improve grid stability, and expand the use of renewable energy sources in line with the country’s net-zero ambitions.
