Coal India Limited Launches ‘Coal Neer’ Initiative, Plans Mine Water Bottling Plant in Dhanbad

Coal India Limited has announced a new sustainability-focused initiative under which treated mine water will be converted into packaged drinking water branded as “Coal Neer.” As part of the project, a dedicated water treatment and bottling plant is set to be established in Dhanbad.

The initiative aims to utilize water extracted from coal mining operations after advanced purification and treatment processes, transforming it into safe drinking water for local communities and commercial use. The move is being viewed as part of Coal India’s broader environmental management and resource sustainability strategy.

Officials say the project could help address water scarcity issues in mining regions while also promoting responsible utilization of mine water, which is often discharged after extraction activities. The company plans to implement modern filtration and purification technologies to ensure the water meets required quality and safety standards.

The upcoming plant in Dhanbad is expected to create local employment opportunities and strengthen community outreach efforts in coal-bearing regions. Industry experts believe the initiative reflects a growing focus among mining companies on environmental sustainability, circular resource management, and social responsibility.

Mine water management has become an increasingly important issue for the mining sector, particularly in areas facing groundwater stress and environmental concerns. By converting treated mine water into usable drinking water, the project seeks to reduce wastage and improve resource efficiency.

The “Coal Neer” initiative also aligns with India’s broader sustainability goals and efforts to encourage industries to adopt environmentally responsible practices.

Further details regarding production capacity, distribution plans, and commercial rollout timelines are expected to be announced after the project development phase progresses.
