PUBLIC transportation company Green SM has entered North America with the official launch of an all-electric taxi service in Los Angeles, California.

The move turns the United States into the ninth market for the Vietnamese transport provider. The platform operates entirely on VinFast battery-electric vehicles, putting its operational system directly into a busy transit market.

This taxi deployment closely follows VinFast’s announcement at the APTA TRANSform & EXPO in Chicago that it will introduce its electric buses to the American public transit market through a partnership with NexMove.

That commercial bus platform targets city transit systems, municipal operations, and high-capacity transport corridors. Meanwhile, establishing passenger operations in Los Angeles gives the company an active test ground to demonstrate real-world battery endurance, turnaround times, and fleet reliability on busy local streets.

The California entry matches Green SM’s broader expansion across several core regions. Since starting in Vietnam in 2023, the fleet expanded into Laos, Indonesia, the Philippines, India, Kazakhstan, Denmark, and the Netherlands.

“The United States represents an important milestone in Green SM’s growth journey. We are not simply expanding into a new market. We aim to build trust with customers, drivers and local communities, one journey at a time,” Hoang Thanh Hang, CEO of Green SM in the U.S. said.

Much seat time

Company data shows its global vehicles have completed roughly eight hundred fifty million rides and logged nearly six billion kilometers. These operations saved an estimated eight hundred thousand tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

In Los Angeles, the company uses a fleet of VinFast VF 8 crossover models. Passengers can book rides through a mobile app, call dispatch directly, or hail cars on the street. To gain initial traction, the rollout includes introductory price discounts alongside subscription options for frequent riders.

“Our experience across international markets has shown us that the future of electric mobility is not defined by an all-electric fleet alone. It also depends on service quality, well-trained and reliable drivers, and genuine care in every customer interaction,” Hoang added.

Operations in Southern California involve recruiting local drivers, setting up training programs, and building maintenance facilities. The company plans to use this base to refine its operations before expanding taxi networks and supporting public transit projects in other American cities.

CleanTechnica reached out to VinFast for clarification on the origin of the Los Angeles fleet, specifically asking whether the crossover vehicles were freshly imported from the main production facility in Hai Phong, Vietnam, or if they represent reconditioned units drawn from the several thousand VF 8 models already sitting in United States inventory and distribution lots. As of publication, VinFast has not yet responded to the inquiry.
