Every year, the number of manufacturers making residential heat pump water heaters (HPWH) for the American market continues to grow. A decade ago, there were just a handful of HPWH manufacturers. In 2026, with Lennox and Reservoir bringing HPWHs to market, the total number has reached 17.

Two more are also coming to market soon, one of which will be announced at our annual HPWH Week event in a couple weeks.

Wow — 17. We think this is great news all around. More brands means more competition, more choices, more form factors, more features, more likelihood HPWHs will be available to contractors and consumers, and hopefully lower prices! It also means that manufacturers see HPWHs as the future, especially as new water heating standards go into effect in 2029 that will require HPWHs in electric water heating applications over 35 gallons.

In this group of 17 manufacturers, there are large companies and startups, domestic and international companies, traditional water heater manufacturers, and HVAC companies looking to get into the game. Some manufacturers are making the HPWHs themselves, others are partnering with another manufacturer to make them. Most are making 240V water heaters, some make 120V plug-in HPWHs, and some are also now making split systems where the indoor tank is separated from the outdoor heat pump.

At the Advanced Water Heating Initiative, we did a couple factsheets on all the residential HPWHs, both unitary and split, on the market earlier this year.

Join us for Heat Pump Water Heater Week this year and see most of these 17 manufacturers, including those bringing products to market this year in a dedicated session.

Below are the webpages for all the different manufacturers (in alphabetical order). What’s your favorite brand of HPWH? Tell us in the comments below and help spread the word about how many great options are out there for efficient water heating.
