Washington/London: The rapid expansion of drone warfare is adding fresh pressure to the West’s already strained supply of critical minerals, as militaries race to produce advanced drones, batteries, electronics and precision-guided systems.
Modern drones depend on a range of strategically important materials, including rare earth elements, lithium, cobalt, nickel, graphite and other specialised metals. As conflicts drive demand for thousands of low-cost and sophisticated unmanned systems, concerns are growing over whether Western supply chains can secure enough of these resources.
The challenge is compounded by the concentration of global mining and processing capacity in a small number of countries. Western governments have increasingly sought to reduce their dependence on overseas suppliers and strengthen domestic mining, refining and recycling capabilities.
The growing use of drones has also intensified competition for minerals needed by other fast-growing industries, particularly electric vehicles, renewable energy, battery storage and artificial intelligence infrastructure. This is creating a broader strategic race for resources that are now seen as essential not only for economic growth but also for national security.
Analysts believe the rise of drone warfare could accelerate investment in alternative supply chains, new mining projects and technologies designed to reduce dependence on scarce materials. However, developing new mines and processing facilities can take years, meaning supply constraints may remain a major challenge.
As drone technology becomes an increasingly important part of modern warfare, control over critical minerals is emerging as a key factor shaping future military strength and global geopolitical competition.
