When scientific warnings become reality, they demand our attention.
In March 2025, Metals & Minerals Publication of India (MMPI) published an editorial “Crumbling Cryosphere – Human Civilization in Existential Crisis”.
The article highlighted the accelerating vulnerability of the Himalayan cryosphere and specifically drew attention to Nepal, listing Yala Glacier as critically endangered and discussing the worrying condition of Pokalde Glacier.
Today, the devastating August 2026 Himalayan disaster in Nepal gives renewed urgency to that warning.

Preliminary scientific assessments of the catastrophe point towards a high-altitude ice-rock avalanche/glacial instability and a cascading flood event. The precise trigger and extent of climate-change attribution remain under investigation, but the tragedy once again demonstrates how disturbances in the cryosphere can rapidly cascade through mountains, rivers, infrastructure and human settlements.
This is precisely the interconnected risk that the MMPI article sought to highlight; the relationship between the Cryosphere, Geosphere and Hydrosphere, and the consequences when this fragile balance is disturbed.
The Himalayas are the “Third Pole”, containing the world’s largest reserve of freshwater outside the polar regions and supporting river systems that are lifelines for nearly two billion people.
The Nepal tragedy must therefore be viewed not merely as an isolated natural disaster, but as another reminder of the growing vulnerability of the Himalayan ecosystem.
For the mining, minerals, hydropower and infrastructure sectors, the message is equally important. Cryosphere risk, mountain hydrology and climate resilience must increasingly become integral components of project planning, engineering and disaster preparedness. The original MMPI article itself called for greater exchange of knowledge between glaciologists and engineers in understanding such hydrological hazards.
The Himalayas are warning us. Science is documenting it. The question is whether policy, industry and society will respond quickly enough.
