MMG Confirms Restart of Operations at Las Bambas Copper Mine in Peru

MMG Limited has confirmed that mining and processing operations at its Las Bambas copper mine in Peru resumed on August 21, following a temporary suspension triggered by a fatal workplace accident.

The operations were halted after an accident on August 18 at a clarification pond located about 9 kilometres from the mine’s processing plant. The incident resulted in the deaths of two workers and injuries to three others. Peru’s National Superintendency of Labour Inspection (Sunafil) subsequently launched an investigation into the accident.

MMG initially suspended activities across the Las Bambas operation as a precautionary measure while investigations were conducted. The company had indicated that a progressive restart could begin from August 21, and has now confirmed that both the mine and processing plant have recommenced operations.

The restart is significant for global copper markets because Las Bambas is one of Peru’s major copper-producing operations. The mine, located in the Apurímac region, is also an important contributor to Peru’s copper output, meaning prolonged disruptions could have affected concentrate supplies at a time when the global copper market is already closely watching supply availability.

The latest incident adds to a history of operational disruptions at Las Bambas, including interruptions linked to community protests and transport blockades. However, the latest shutdown was directly related to the workplace accident rather than a community blockade.

With operations now restored, market attention is likely to shift toward the pace at which production returns to normal levels and the outcome of Peru’s safety investigation. The resumption also reduces immediate concerns about another prolonged interruption from one of South America’s important copper mines.
