US Expands Search for Critical Minerals Projects to Strengthen Defense Supply Chains
The United States is intensifying efforts to identify and support critical-mineral projects that can supply materials needed for military equipment, as Washington seeks to reduce its dependence on foreign sources and strengthen domestic defense supply chains.
The latest push is focused on minerals and materials used in fighter aircraft, night-vision systems, missiles, batteries, magnets and other advanced defense technologies. The Trump administration has been encouraging domestic producers and project developers to submit investment proposals as part of a broader strategy to expand U.S. mining, processing and refining capacity.
Critical minerals such as rare earth elements, cobalt, graphite, lithium, gallium, germanium and antimony are increasingly viewed as strategic resources. The U.S. Department of Defense has already been directing funding toward projects designed to strengthen domestic production and processing of these materials. The Army, for example, recently announced conditional leases for critical-mineral processing facilities at four Army installations.
The administration has also committed billions of dollars to minerals and battery projects. Recent investments include support for lithium-ion battery materials, rare-earth magnets and other technologies considered important to the defense industrial base.
The move comes amid growing concerns over China’s dominant position in global critical-mineral processing and supply chains. U.S. officials and defense companies are increasingly seeking alternative sources and domestic processing capacity to ensure that disruptions in overseas supplies do not affect military production.
Defense contractors are also responding. Lockheed Martin, for instance, has been pursuing potential U.S. supplies of scandium and germanium for applications including aircraft components and infrared sensors.
However, building a fully domestic supply chain will take time. The United States still faces shortages in mining, refining infrastructure and skilled workers, while many projects require substantial investment before reaching commercial-scale production.
The expanded search for critical-mineral projects therefore represents a major component of Washington’s broader effort to build a more resilient defense industrial base, reduce strategic dependence on overseas suppliers and secure the raw materials required for next-generation military technologies.
