China Introduces New Mining Controls to Accelerate Strategic Reserve Expansion

China has introduced new mining controls aimed at accelerating the expansion of its strategic reserves of critical minerals and resources. The move is part of the country’s broader efforts to strengthen resource security and maintain stability in key industrial supply chains.

Under the new measures, authorities are expected to tighten oversight of mining production, resource allocation, and export management for strategically important minerals. The policy is designed to ensure stable domestic supply for industries linked to electric vehicles, renewable energy, semiconductors, and defense manufacturing.

China remains one of the world’s leading producers and processors of several critical minerals, including rare earth elements. Analysts say the latest controls could help the country improve reserve management and strengthen its position in global commodity markets amid rising geopolitical and economic competition.

The development comes as major economies around the world increase efforts to secure access to essential minerals needed for advanced technologies and clean energy transitions.
