Coal demand is set for an uptick as rising electricity consumption across the country drives higher generation from thermal power plants, reinforcing coal’s role in meeting near-term energy needs.
Power demand has been climbing steadily due to industrial expansion, increased household consumption, and wider adoption of electrical appliances, particularly during peak seasons. Utilities are ramping up coal-based generation to ensure grid stability and prevent supply shortfalls, especially as renewable energy sources remain subject to variability.
Officials indicated that coal offtake by power producers is expected to increase in the coming months to rebuild stock levels at power stations and support higher load requirements. Improved domestic coal availability and logistics have also enabled generators to plan for sustained operations without major supply disruptions.
While renewable capacity continues to expand, thermal power remains critical for base-load generation and balancing fluctuations from solar and wind energy. Policymakers have emphasised the need to maintain adequate coal supplies to safeguard energy security, even as the transition towards cleaner sources accelerates.
