Engineering and construction major Larsen & Toubro is in discussions with Holtec International to explore a potential entry into the United States nuclear energy market, senior company executive Subramanian Sarma said.
The move marks a significant step in L&T’s plans to expand its nuclear energy business globally. The conglomerate, which has played a critical role in India’s nuclear power development over several decades, is looking to enter the US market as a supplier of nuclear energy equipment, leveraging its strong manufacturing and engineering capabilities.
According to Sarma, discussions with Holtec are at an exploratory stage and could evolve into a strategic partnership focused on supplying equipment and systems for nuclear power projects in the US. L&T is expected to combine its expertise in heavy engineering, fabrication, and project execution with Holtec’s nuclear technology and reactor design capabilities.
L&T has been a long-standing partner in India’s nuclear programme, having contributed to all of the country’s operating nuclear reactors. Its experience includes manufacturing key components such as reactor vessels, steam generators, heat exchangers, and equipment for nuclear fuel and heavy water plants.
The potential US foray comes amid renewed global interest in nuclear energy, particularly small modular reactors, as countries seek reliable and low-carbon power sources to meet rising electricity demand. If the talks translate into a formal collaboration, it would mark L&T’s first major entry into the US nuclear supply chain and strengthen its position in the global nuclear energy market.
